The KENNAMETAL 5697185 is a VNMG331FF solid carbide turning insert with a KCP10B multilayer CVD coating (TiCN, Al2O3, TiOCN) engineered for finishing operations on steel and cast iron. The 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape and honed cutting edge deliver consistent surface finish control at light to moderate depths of cut. The insert measures 16.61 mm (1.3076 inches) in length with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/64-inch corner radius. Four available cutting edges extend tool life and reduce per-edge cost. Licensed machinists and CNC turning center operators install this insert in KENLOC-style toolholders for external turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications.
This insert is suited for finishing cuts on steel (ISO P) workpieces where high wear resistance is required, and on aluminum and non-ferrous materials (ISO N) where a balance of wear resistance and toughness is needed. Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine powered down, the spindle locked, and all guarding reinstalled before resuming cuts. Use the correct torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not estimate clamp force by feel. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear, chips, or debris before seating a new insert, as a contaminated pocket will shift insert position and reduce edge life. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and cutting tool manufacturer recommendations for starting cutting parameters when transitioning to a new insert grade or geometry.
