The KENNAMETAL 5696942 is a VNMG431LF turning insert in the KCP25B grade, designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. This solid carbide insert features a multilayer CVD coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and TiOCN — that delivers moderate wear resistance and toughness across a range of workpiece materials. The 35-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape provides a sharp, low-force cutting geometry suited for finishing and light machining passes. With a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a 0.0156 inch corner radius, and a negative rake angle, it is a standard-profile insert for productive, controlled material removal in high-tolerance turning applications.
This insert is intended for finishing and light machining operations on steel, cast iron, aluminum, and non-ferrous materials. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for these lower-feed, tight-tolerance passes where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are the priority. Typical applications include turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring on production and job-shop CNC turning equipment. The KCP25B grade is suited for steel (P-class) and non-ferrous (N-class) workpieces where a balance of wear resistance and edge toughness is required. This insert meets ANSI and ISO standards under codes VNMG431 and VNMG220404 respectively.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for KENLOC series toolholders accepting VNMG431 geometry inserts with clamp or pin retention. Verify toolholder seat size and insert pocket geometry before installation.
VNMG turning inserts are installed and replaced by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench for the clamping screw — refer to the toolholder manufacturer specifications for seating torque. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new insert, and confirm the cutting edge index or replacement is logged per your shop tool-management process.
