The KENNAMETAL 5689992 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting M3x0.50 metric coarse internal threads in production and maintenance machining environments. Built from vanadium high speed steel with a multi-layer TiN/CrC/C coating, this tap delivers extended tool life and reduced friction in demanding applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard plug tap. With a 3-flute, right-hand spiral design and a 25-degree helix angle, it efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole, making it well suited for blind-hole tapping operations. Qualified to a 6H class of fit and a D3 thread limit, it produces threads within standard tolerance for most precision fastener applications.
This tap is optimized for use in aluminum cast alloy and similar non-ferrous materials where chip packing in blind holes is a common concern. The spiral flute geometry promotes clean chip evacuation without coolant-through assistance. It fits into standard machine tap holders for use on CNC machining centers, tapping heads, and drill-tap machines. The Series T686 designation identifies the full product family for procurement and tooling management purposes. The 8 mm thread length accommodates typical thread engagement requirements for M3 fastener installations.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use spiral flute tap for M3x0.50 metric coarse blind-hole tapping operations in standard machine tool holders accepting the specified shank diameter.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists and tooling technicians using CNC machining centers, tapping heads, or drill-tap equipment. Always ensure the tap holder is correctly sized for the 3.58 mm shank diameter and that the spindle is set to the correct thread pitch feed rate before engaging the workpiece. De-energize and lock out the machine before changing or inspecting tooling. Do not force a tap that has stopped advancing — back it out and inspect for chip packing or tool wear before continuing.
