The KENNAMETAL 5534238 is a solid carbide indexable drill insert designed for use in indexable drilling toolholders in metal cutting operations. Manufactured to the SPPX insert style in a square shape, this insert carries the KCU40 grade designation and features a PVD-applied TiN and TiAlN coating stack that promotes wear resistance and heat control at the cutting edge. The inscribed circle measures 0.5 inches (12.70 mm), the insert thickness is 0.1874 inches, and the corner radius is 0.80 mm. The MD chipbreaker geometry is engineered for controlled chip formation in drilling applications. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians install this insert as a replaceable cutting element in compatible drill bodies.
This insert is suited for indexable drilling applications in ferrous and compatible workpiece materials across production machining, job shop, and maintenance environments. The right-hand cutting direction and 11-degree relief angle make it appropriate for general-purpose hole-making operations where controlled chip evacuation and edge stability are required. The SPPX insert style and 120408 insert size designation help match this insert to compatible drill bodies requiring that geometry. This insert ships individually but carries a minimum order quantity of 5 units.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement indexable drill insert for toolholders requiring the SPPX insert style in the 120408 insert size with a 0.5 inch inscribed circle and right-hand cutting direction.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing any insert. Verify the drill body pocket and clamping screw are free of chips and damage before installing the insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications for the clamping screw — do not over-torque, as solid carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under excessive clamp load.
