The KENNAMETAL 5532931 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the EG-U2GUP insert style with a KCU25 grade substrate, it features an AlTiN coating applied via PVD process for enhanced heat resistance and extended tool life in demanding cutting environments. The insert delivers a 2.51 mm cutting width with a maximum depth of cut of 1.67 mm, making it well suited for shallow, accurate groove profiles. A positive rake angle of 22 degrees and GUP chip breaker geometry promote clean chip evacuation and reduce cutting forces during grooving passes.
This insert is part of the Beyond Evolution series and is intended for use by machinists and tooling technicians on turning and grooving applications in metalworking operations. It is sized as an Insert Size 2 metric-measurement insert with a cutting height of 3.21 mm and a corner radius of 0.20 mm. The neutral hand orientation allows flexible setup on compatible grooving toolholders. Typical applications include groove turning on steel, stainless steel, and similar materials where a PVD-coated carbide grade such as KCU25 provides consistent performance.
Designed for use with EG-U style grooving toolholders compatible with Insert Size 2 grooving inserts in the Beyond Evolution series. Verify toolholder seat specifications and clamping style before installation.
Carbide grooving inserts should be installed by qualified machinists following the toolholder manufacturer's seating and clamping procedures. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is clean and free of debris before seating the insert. Use the recommended torque driver or wrench specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten the clamping screw, as carbide inserts are brittle. Confirm insert orientation and depth-of-cut settings against the workpiece drawing before initiating the cut.
