The KENNAMETAL 5455862 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in a range of metalworking applications. Built from High-Speed Steel-E (HSS-E) and finished with a dual TiCN and TiN coating, this tap delivers extended tool life and resistance to heat buildup during cutting. It is sized for 8-32 UNC threads and features a plug chamfer with 2 flutes, producing a right-hand thread. The overall length is 2.125 inches with a thread length of 0.38 inches and a shank diameter of 0.168 inches. The H4 thread limit designation makes it suitable for close-tolerance tapped holes. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians in production and job-shop environments are the typical users.
This tap is engineered for through-hole threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, making it well suited for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads where unobstructed chip flow is critical. It belongs to Kennametal Series T820 and carries material grade KSP32. It is not designed for blind-hole applications where chip evacuation to the rear is required.
Designed for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metal workpieces requiring 8-32 UNC threads. Suitable for use with standard tapping attachments, CNC machining centers, and manual tapping equipment that accept the 0.168-inch shank diameter of this Series T820 tap.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard tapping procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is properly aligned before beginning the tapping cycle. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for the workpiece material to maximize tool life and thread quality. Do not reverse the tap under load without proper tapping-head support, as HSS-E taps can fracture if torque is applied off-axis.
