The KENNAMETAL 5455840 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in metalworking applications. It cuts a 6-32 UNC right-hand thread to a 2B class of fit using a plug chamfer entry, which provides a gradual lead-in suited to machine tapping. The tap is manufactured from HSS-E (high-speed steel with cobalt) and carries a triple coating of TiN, CrC, and C, which extends tool life and reduces friction when cutting harder materials such as stainless steel and non-ferrous metals. With an H3 thread limit and a 1.990-inch overall length, it fits standard tap holders used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads. Machinists and tool-room technicians are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is built for through-hole threading operations in stainless steel and non-ferrous metals. The spiral point design pushes chips forward through the hole, making it effective in machine tapping where chip evacuation is critical. It is suited to production environments where consistent thread quality is required across repeated cycles. The plug chamfer provides the balance of lead-in length needed for most standard through-hole machine tapping setups. It does not support coolant-through operation, so external or flood coolant should be directed at the cutting zone when machining difficult materials.
Designed for through-hole threading in stainless steel and non-ferrous metals as stated in the product specifications. Part of the Kennametal Series T820 tap line. No specific machine or toolholder model compatibility was provided in the product data.
This tap is intended for installation and use by qualified machinists in machine tapping applications. Power down the tapping machine and confirm the spindle is fully stopped before loading or removing the tap from the holder. Secure the tap in a properly sized collet or tap holder matched to the 0.141-inch shank diameter before beginning the operation. Since this tap does not feature coolant-through capability, direct external or flood coolant to the cutting zone when working with stainless steel to manage heat buildup.
