The KENNAMETAL 5443824 is a spiral flute bottoming tap designed for threading 6-40 unified fine pitch holes in ferrous materials. It features two right-hand flutes with a 45-degree helix angle, a configuration that evacuates chips upward and keeps the cutting zone clear in blind-hole applications. The tap is ground from vanadium high speed steel and finished with an oxide coating that provides lubricity and mild corrosion resistance during cutting. With a 2-inch overall length and a thread length of 9.5 mm, this tap is sized for compact fastener installations where thread depth and clearance are critical. It belongs to Kennametal's GOtap series and carries an H3 thread limit for controlled fit tolerances.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance threading operations in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The bottoming chamfer geometry allows threading to the bottom of blind holes, making it the correct choice when a plug or taper tap cannot reach the required thread depth. It fits standard tap holders and is well-suited for CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand tapping in precision assemblies. Machinists and toolmakers working with 6-40 fastener specifications in tight-clearance housings, instrument hardware, and small mechanical assemblies will find this tap appropriate for their work.
Designed for threading 6-40 unified fine pitch holes in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. Fits standard tap holders accepting a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or toolmaker familiar with tapping operations for unified fine threads. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle or tap handle is properly aligned before cutting to prevent tap breakage. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material before and during the tapping cycle. When replacing or inspecting the tap, confirm the holder is fully de-energized or the machine is locked out before removing or installing cutting tools.
