The KENNAMETAL 5416900 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in a range of ferrous workpiece materials. Built to 3/8-16 UNC specifications with a 2B class of fit and H5 thread limit, this tap produces controlled, accurate internal threads in production and maintenance machining environments. The cutting body is manufactured from high-speed steel with cobalt enrichment (HSS-E), ground to Kennametal material grade KSP39, and finished with an oxide coating to reduce friction and improve tool life under moderate cutting conditions. With three flutes and a plug chamfer, the tap is suited for through-hole applications where chips can be pushed ahead of the cut. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in job shop or production settings are the primary users.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading operations in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The plug chamfer style — typically four to five threads of lead — makes it a standard choice when the full thread can run through the workpiece and chip evacuation ahead of the tap is not restricted. It is well matched to CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines where a rigid setup and consistent feed rate can be maintained. The right-hand thread direction and standard fractional-inch sizing make it a direct fit for the most common 3/8-16 fastener threads found in structural and mechanical assemblies.
Designed for through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. Part of the Kennametal T820 series. Compatible with standard 3/8-inch tap holders and collet chucks sized for a 0.381-inch shank diameter.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician using a rigid tap holder or floating tap adapter appropriate for the machine type. Ensure the spindle, workpiece, and fixture are fully secured and the machine is at a safe stop before loading or changing tooling. Use a cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the workpiece material — particularly important when threading stainless steel or cast iron. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as a damaged tap can seize in the hole and damage both the workpiece and the tap holder.
