The KENNAMETAL 5416899 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in ferrous materials. Built from High-Speed Steel-E (HSS-E) with an oxide coating, it cuts 3/8-16 UNC right-hand threads to a 3B class of fit and H3 thread limit. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, keeping the flutes clear and reducing the risk of chip packing in production environments. With a 3-flute configuration and plug chamfer, this tap suits general-purpose tapping in materials including steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Overall length is 2.9375 inches and thread length is 0.75 inches. It is part of KENNAMETAL Series T820 and carries material grade KSP39.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading applications on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping setups in industrial and job-shop environments. The plug chamfer provides a gradual lead-in and is well suited for starting in pre-drilled through holes. It is appropriate for threading steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces where a 3/8-16 UNC thread form is required. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and CNC operators are the primary users. Coolant-through capability is not supported on this tool, so external cutting fluid application is recommended when tapping stainless steel or other work-hardening alloys.
Designed for through-hole threading applications requiring a 3/8-16 UNC thread form in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Fits standard 3/8-inch tap holders and tapping chucks compatible with the shank diameter of 0.381 inches.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator following applicable shop safety procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the correct pre-drill size for a 3/8-16 UNC thread is used before tapping. Apply appropriate cutting fluid, particularly when working with stainless steel or other work-hardening materials, as this tap does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread quality degrades.
