The KENNAMETAL 5397509 is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the KSEM Plus series, designed for high-productivity drilling in steel and stainless steel applications. The cutting tip is manufactured from solid carbide in a fine grain grade designated KCPM45, with a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process. The 140-degree drill point angle and HPG insert geometry promote controlled chip formation and stable entry. At 1.5 inches (38.10 mm) cutting diameter, this drill is suited for production environments where tip changeability reduces downtime compared to brazed or solid-body tools. Licensed HVAC and plumbing tradespeople are not the target here — this is a machinist and CNC tooling component installed and managed by metalworking professionals.
The 5397509 is used in ferrous metal machining operations on CNC machining centers and drilling machines. Its through-coolant capability supports both flood coolant and MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubricant) strategies, extending tool life in demanding cuts. The HPG geometry and regular helical spiral flute design allow it to perform on inclined exits and stacked plate configurations, where entry and exit conditions are irregular. The 2-flute, 2-margin configuration provides guidance and stability across these challenging setups.
Designed for use in KSEM Plus series drill bodies accepting insert seat size 10. Compatible primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO material code P) and stainless steel (ISO material code M) per manufacturer specifications.
Installation and tip changes must be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel following machine lockout/tagout procedures before any tool change. The replaceable tip is secured via a clamp-style holding method — refer to the KSEM Plus system assembly instructions for proper seating and torque procedure documentation from the manufacturer. Inspect the insert seat for debris or damage before mounting a new tip. Coolant passages should be verified clear before resuming production cuts.
