The KENNAMETAL 5397505 is a carbide replaceable tip drill built around the KSEM Plus platform, designed for high-productivity hole-making in steel and stainless steel. The tip carries the KCPM45 grade designation, manufactured from fine-grain solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating for heat and wear resistance. The drill features a 32mm cutting diameter, a 140-degree included point angle, and a standard HPG insert geometry. Two helical flutes and two margins support stable chip evacuation and surface finish. Internal coolant passages make it compatible with through-coolant and MQL delivery. A clamp-type insert holding method secures the tip to the body during heavy-feed drilling cycles. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the primary users.
This drill tip is intended for use in rotating drilling applications on machining centers, drill presses, and turning centers equipped with live tooling. The KSEM Plus system is engineered for drilling in steel and stainless steel workpieces, including inclined-entry and exit conditions as well as stacked-plate configurations. The HPG insert geometry suits these interrupted and angled entry scenarios by reducing lateral deflection at drill engagement. The 32mm cutting diameter and 16mm flute length are sized for moderate-depth holes in structural and precision-machined components.

Installation of replaceable carbide drill tips requires a calibrated torque wrench and the correct Kennametal clamp key for the KSEM insert seat size. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the tool holder secured before seating or removing the tip. Inspect the insert pocket and locating surfaces for chips or contamination before installing a new tip, as debris on the seating face will affect runout and tip retention. Verify coolant port alignment after tip installation before resuming cutting operations.
