The KENNAMETAL 5397490 is a solid carbide replaceable tip drill in the KSEM Plus series, designed for high-productivity hole-making in steel and stainless steel. The tip carries the ISO designation KSEM2400HPGM and is manufactured from fine-grain carbide in the KCPM45 grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating for heat and wear resistance. The 140-degree drill point angle and HPG insert geometry support aggressive feed rates while maintaining hole quality. With a cutting diameter of 24mm (0.9449 inches) and a flute length of 12mm, this tip is sized for heavy-material drilling applications where consistent tool life and repeatability matter. Installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in CNC drilling operations.
This replaceable tip drill is suited for drilling operations in steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M) workpiece materials in production machining environments. The helical, 2-flute, 2-margin geometry with through-coolant capability supports both flood coolant and MQL (minimum quantity lubricant) delivery strategies. Typical applications include straight drilling, inclined-exit drilling, and stacked-plate drilling where chip evacuation and point stability are critical. The clamp-style insert holding method ensures secure tip retention under interrupted or variable-feed conditions.
Designed for use with KSEM Plus series drill bodies accepting insert seat size 4. Compatible workpiece materials include steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians on CNC machining centers or drill presses. Ensure the drill body is clean and free of chips or damage before seating the replaceable tip, and use the manufacturer-specified clamping method to secure the insert. Verify spindle speed, feed rate, and coolant supply settings against the approved cutting data for the workpiece material before commencing operation. Do not exceed the rated cutting parameters for the KCPM45 grade, and inspect the tip for wear or chipping at regular intervals.
