The KENNAMETAL 5090816 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision finishing operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying the VNGG330FS geometry with grade KCU10, this insert features a PVD-applied TiAlN coating that delivers high wear resistance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, negative rake angle of 12 degrees, and honed cutting edge style make it well suited for finishing passes where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are critical. It provides 4 usable cutting edges per insert, reducing tooling cost per edge. The insert mounts via clamp and pin in KENLOC-compatible toolholders.
This insert is rated for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, cast iron, and aluminum, corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, K, N, S, and H. The FS chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing cuts, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.080 inches (2.03 mm). It is appropriate for production environments in aerospace, general machining, and medical component manufacturing where tight tolerances are held consistently.
Designed for use in KENLOC-compatible toolholders accepting VNGG-style inserts per ANSI insert code VNGG3302 and ISO insert code VNGG160401. Suitable for clamp-and-pin insert holding systems with a 0.150-inch hole diameter. Verify toolholder seat geometry before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque driver for the clamping screw to avoid seat damage or insert fracture - refer to the toolholder manufacturer's torque specification. Inspect the toolholder pocket and pin for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
