The KENNAMETAL 4175981 is a carbide threading insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision thread-turning operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. The insert carries a KCU10 grade designation and features a PVD-applied AlTiN finish that provides heat resistance and extended tool life in demanding threading applications. The NT3R insert style is right-hand oriented and covers a partial profile 60-degree thread form, making it suitable for cutting both internal and external threads across a wide pitch range. At 0.04 pounds, this is a precision indexable insert intended for machinists and toolroom professionals working to tight thread tolerances.
This insert handles external thread pitches from 1.25 to 4.00 mm and 6 to 20 TPI, and internal thread pitches from 2.00 to 5.00 mm and 5 to 12 TPI. It is well suited to production threading in job shops, manufacturing facilities, and maintenance machining environments where consistent thread form accuracy is required across both inch and metric thread standards. The K-style chipbreaker aids chip evacuation during threading passes, reducing the risk of re-cutting chips in both through and blind-hole applications.
Designed for use with Top Notch series threading toolholders that accept NT3R insert style, size 3 inserts. Suitable for both internal and external threading applications using partial profile 60-degree geometry.
Indexable threading inserts should be seated and clamped per the toolholder manufacturer's torque guidelines using the appropriate Torx or hex key. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surface are clean and free of debris before indexing or replacing the insert. Verify spindle and axis motion are fully stopped and the machine is in a safe state before handling inserts. Always confirm insert orientation and hand designation match the toolholder and intended thread direction before initiating a cut.
