The KENNAMETAL 4175980 is a carbide threading insert in the NT3LK geometry, designed for precision thread-cutting on both internal and external workpieces. It carries the KCU10 grade designation and features an AlTiN finish applied via PVD coating, which provides thermal resistance and extended edge life in demanding turning applications. This is a left-hand insert with a partial profile 60-degree thread standard and a K-style chipbreaker. It handles external pitches from 1.25 to 4.00 mm (6 to 20 TPI) and internal pitches from 2.00 to 5.00 mm (5 to 12 TPI). Machinists and CNC turning specialists working in tool rooms, job shops, and production environments are the primary users.
This insert is suited for threading operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers where consistent thread form and surface finish are required. Its partial profile geometry makes it adaptable across multiple thread pitches within its rated range, reducing tooling inventory for shops running varied pitch requirements. The left-hand orientation serves applications where workpiece rotation or thread direction demands left-hand cutting geometry. It fits the Top Notch series toolholding system, which is a common platform across KENNAMETAL threading toolholders.
Designed for use with KENNAMETAL Top Notch series threading toolholders that accept NT insert style geometry. Verify toolholder pocket style and insert size 3 seating before installation.
Threading inserts are seated and secured by a machinist or CNC toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine before changing inserts. Ensure the insert pocket is clean and free of chips or burrs before seating the insert, as debris under the insert will affect thread form accuracy. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque specifications for the Top Notch locking screw, and verify insert orientation matches the intended thread hand before resuming cutting.
