The KENNAMETAL 4175853 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to NG insert style specifications with a KCU10 grade designation, this insert features a physical vapor deposition (PVD) AlTiN coating for improved wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The left-hand configuration, 1.58 mm cutting width, and 2.79 mm maximum depth of cut make it well suited for tight-tolerance grooving work in production machining environments. Installation and tooling changes are performed by machining professionals familiar with indexable insert toolholders and Top Notch-compatible clamping systems.
This insert is applied in grooving and profiling operations on ferrous and nonferrous workpiece materials where a metric-dimensioned, small-width groove profile is required. The KCU10 carbide grade falls within the C3 and C4 material grade range, making it appropriate for continuous and interrupted cuts on a range of steels and cast materials. It is used in industries including automotive, aerospace, and general precision machining where consistent groove geometry and surface finish are critical.
Designed for use with Top Notch series clamping-style toolholders that accept NG insert style, size 2062 inserts. Compatible toolholder reference from supplier data: NG2062R/LK.
This insert is installed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician using the appropriate Top Notch clamping screw and torque driver - ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is indexed away from the work zone before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Do not exceed the specified maximum depth of cut for the grade and coating selected, as this may cause insert fracture or premature edge failure.
