Product Description

The KENNAMETAL 4171837 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TNMG221FF geometry, manufactured to ANSI and ISO standards under the KENLOC series. This insert carries the KCU10 grade designation and features a PVD-applied TiAlN coating designed for wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The triangular insert shape provides 6 usable cutting edges with a neutral hand orientation. A 1/4-inch inscribed circle, 1/64-inch corner radius, and honed cutting edge style make this insert well suited for finishing and light-to-medium material removal operations. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers and users of this tooling.

This insert is engineered for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. Its FF chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation during these operations. The negative rake angle combined with the 60-degree included angle and 20-degree rake angle supports stable cutting in demanding alloy applications. It is sized for use in standard TNMG-compatible toolholders and boring bar systems that accept this insert style and clamping method.

Key Features

  • PVD TiAlN coating for thermal stability and extended tool life on steel and high-temperature alloys
  • 6 usable cutting edges per insert, maximizing value per unit
  • FF chip breaker geometry designed for controlled chip evacuation in finishing passes
  • Honed cutting edge style reduces micro-chipping on difficult-to-machine materials
  • Neutral hand orientation fits left- or right-hand toolholder setups
  • Compliant with ANSI and ISO insert standards for broad toolholder compatibility

Compatibility

Designed for use in TNMG-style toolholders and boring bars that accept clamp and pin holding methods. Compatible with applications involving steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces as noted by primary workpiece material codes P, M, and S. ISO code equivalent is TNMG110304FF. Industry standard number is TNMG221FF.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the appropriate torque driver for the clamp screw per the toolholder manufacturer specification; do not overtighten by hand or with unrated tools.
