The KENNAMETAL 4146454 is a ceramic turning insert in the KENDEX series, designed for high-performance metal cutting in demanding machining applications. It carries the ANSI insert code SNG656E and ISO code SNGN190724E, featuring a square insert shape with a 90-degree included angle, a 0.75-inch inscribed circle, and a 3/32-inch (0.0938-inch) corner radius. The insert is manufactured from SiAlON ceramic in an uncoated, bright finish with a honed cutting edge style. With 8 cutting edges and a flat-top chip breaker geometry, it delivers moderate wear resistance and toughness suited to interrupted and continuous cuts in difficult-to-machine materials. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists are the primary installers.
This insert is engineered primarily for superalloys and titanium (ISO material group S), making it well-suited for aerospace, power generation, and oil and gas component machining. It supports turning, facing, and boring operations. The negative rake and negative side clearance geometry, combined with the SiAlON ceramic grade KYS30, make it appropriate for high-speed, dry or minimal-coolant passes on nickel-based superalloys, titanium alloys, and similar hard materials. The maximum depth of cut is 0.25 inches. It is held by clamp-style toolholders compatible with SNG-style insert seating.
Designed for use in clamp-style SNG-format toolholders. Compatible with turning, facing, and boring operations on superalloys and titanium workpieces. Fits toolholders specified for ANSI size code 656 and ISO size code 190724 inserts.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten the clamping screw, as ceramic inserts are brittle and susceptible to fracture under excessive clamping force. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
