The KENNAMETAL 4131272 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a wide range of metalworking applications. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap produces 1-8 UNC right-hand threads to a Class 2B fit with an H6 thread limit. It carries four flutes for efficient chip evacuation and controlled cutting performance. With an overall length of 5.13 inches and a thread length of 2.5 inches, it is sized for standard production and repair threading operations in job shops, maintenance facilities, and manufacturing environments. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is suited for threading cast iron and non-ferrous metals, making it a practical choice for both production threading and field repair work. The plug chamfer style — typically 3 to 5 lead threads — allows the tap to start easily in through-holes and blind holes with adequate clearance. It is part of the Kennametal Series 5305 and 5303 product lines. The straight-flute geometry is best applied in shorter-chipping materials such as cast iron, brass, and bronze, where chip packing is not a concern.
Designed for threading cast iron and non-ferrous metals. Belongs to Kennametal Series 5305 and 5303. Compatible with standard tap holders, T-handle tap wrenches, and machine tap adapters sized for a 0.8-inch shank diameter.
This tap is installed by a machinist or toolroom technician using a T-handle tap wrench or machine tapping attachment. Always apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material before threading to reduce friction and extend tool life. Ensure the tap is started square to the hole to prevent thread runout or tap breakage. Do not force the tap through hard obstructions — back off periodically to break and clear chips when working in blind holes.
