The KENNAMETAL 4131258 is a spiral point tap designed for threading through-holes in a range of ferrous materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap produces 5/8-11 UNC internal threads to a 3B class of fit. The plug chamfer and three-flute spiral point geometry push chips forward ahead of the cutting action, making it well suited for through-hole applications where chip evacuation is critical. Overall length is 3.81 inches with a thread length of 1.813 inches. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, and maintenance trades reach for this tap when threading steel, stainless steel, cast iron, or ductile iron in production or repair settings.
This tap is used in industrial, commercial, and maintenance environments where 5/8-11 UNC through-hole threads are required. Typical applications include threading bores in structural steel, machinery components, pump housings, and heavy-equipment frames. The TiCN finish extends tool life in abrasive materials compared to uncoated HSS taps. The H3 thread limit provides a controlled oversize allowance appropriate for standard 3B tolerance threading. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional 5/8-11 UNC fastener applications.
Designed for through-hole 5/8-11 UNC threading in cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and steel. Part of the KENNAMETAL 5301S series. Not recommended for blind-hole applications where chip packing is a concern.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance mechanics using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machine spindle. Power down and secure the workpiece fully before tapping. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being threaded — sulfurized oil is common for steel and cast iron, while a water-soluble coolant is often preferred for stainless steel. Verify the pilot hole diameter meets the recommended tap drill size for 5/8-11 UNC before beginning the threading operation.
