The KENNAMETAL 4130030 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting or producing chips. It uses plastic deformation to create strong, work-hardened threads in through-hole applications. Manufactured from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life in steel applications. The plug chamfer style features 3.5 to 5 chamfered threads to ease starting and guide the tap into the hole. With an overall length of 1.875 inches and a thread length of 0.313 inches, this tap is sized for precision work in tight assemblies. It is installed by machinists and tool-room technicians on manual and CNC tapping equipment.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in steel and similarly ductile materials, producing 4-40 UNC right-hand threads. Its H3 thread limit provides a controlled pitch diameter tolerance appropriate for standard 4-40 fastener fitment. Typical applications include light machine assembly, electronics hardware, instrument enclosures, and small mechanical subassemblies where chip-free thread forming is required. The TiN coating reduces friction during the forming process and extends tool life in production and maintenance environments alike.
Designed for through-hole threading of 4-40 UNC right-hand threads in steel and other ductile materials. Shank diameter of 0.141 inches is compatible with standard tap chucks and holders sized for the 4-40 thread range.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — do not use a standard cut-tap drill size, as the hole diameter must be larger to allow material displacement rather than cutting. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or cutting oil for steel to reduce heat and tool wear. Secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is started perpendicular to the workpiece surface before applying rotational force. Tapping operations on powered equipment should use a torque-limiting tap holder to prevent tap breakage in small diameters like 4-40.
