The KENNAMETAL 4109929 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external and internal grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying the KCU25 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied AlTiN coating, this insert delivers heat resistance and edge retention across a broad range of workpiece materials. It features a 1.58 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.18 mm, making it suited to shallow-to-medium groove profiles. The left-hand orientation and full-radius geometry with a 0.79 mm corner radius produce consistent, clean groove floors. Machinists and CNC operators working in production environments will find this insert a reliable choice for controlled chip management and repeatable surface finish.
This insert belongs to the Top Notch series and uses a clamp-style holding method for secure, repeatable seating in compatible Top Notch toolholders. It is intended for metric-measurement setups and fits insert size designation 3031. Typical applications include grooving and profiling of steel, stainless steel, and similar materials in high-volume turning operations. The 55-degree included angle supports V-profile and threading-adjacent groove geometries where precise angular control is required.
Designed for use in Top Notch series clamp-style toolholders accepting insert size 3031 in left-hand orientation. Consult the KENNAMETAL Top Notch toolholder catalog to confirm holder compatibility before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing any insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamping screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not over-torque the clamp screw, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper support and prevent premature edge failure.
