The KENNAMETAL 4109785 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the NG3072K insert style designation and is finished with a PVD-applied AlTiN coating for improved wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The insert delivers a cutting width of 1.83 mm (0.0720 inch) and a maximum depth of cut of 2.39 mm (0.0941 inch). Carbide grade KCU25 is suited for interrupted cuts and applications requiring toughness alongside edge retention. This is a right-hand, single-use insert intended for installation by machinists and CNC tooling technicians.
The 4109785 is applied in general-purpose grooving on steel, alloy steel, and similar workpiece materials where a metric-dimension insert is specified. The Top Notch series uses a mechanical clamp holding method, making it compatible with Top Notch style toolholders. Typical applications include groove turning, part-off preparation, and undercut work on production and job-shop turning equipment. The K chip breaker geometry assists in chip control across a range of feed rates within the recommended depth-of-cut range of 2.00 mm to 3.00 mm.
Designed for use with Top Notch series clamp-style toolholders that accept the NG3072 insert size. The MSC and manufacturer cross-reference number for this insert is NG3072R/LK. Verify toolholder specifications before ordering to confirm insert size and hand orientation match.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Ensure the clamp screw is tightened to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque using the correct Torx or hex key. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination in the pocket can affect insert position and surface finish.
