The KENNAMETAL 4109660 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a PVD-applied AlTiN coating over a KCU25 carbide substrate, providing thermal resistance and edge wear protection during interrupted and continuous cuts. The insert style is NFD with a right-hand cutting orientation, a 0.25-inch (6.35 mm) cutting width, and a maximum depth of cut of 0.50 inch (12.70 mm). A K-style chip breaker and a 12-degree rake angle support chip control across a range of workpiece materials. Clamp-style insert holding secures the insert in compatible Top Notch toolholders.
This insert is suited for precision grooving, recessing, and face grooving on steel, stainless, and similar machinable alloys in both production and job-shop environments. The 55-degree included angle geometry and 0.57 mm corner radius (0.0224 inch) make it appropriate for finish-grooving passes where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are critical. It is installed and replaced by machinists and CNC tooling technicians. The insert is sold individually but carries a minimum order quantity of 5 units per order cycle.
Designed for use with Top Notch series toolholders accepting insert seat size 4 and the NFD insert style. The MSC and manufacturer cross-reference number is NFD4250R/LK. Verify toolholder compatibility against the Top Notch series insert seat and clamp specifications before ordering.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a full stop and lockout-tagout procedure applied. Use the manufacturer-specified clamp screw and torque method per the Top Notch toolholder documentation — do not overtighten or substitute non-OEM clamp hardware. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for debris or damage before seating the insert. Confirm cutting direction and insert hand orientation match the programmed toolpath before resuming machine operation.
