The KENNAMETAL 3794404 is a KSEM Plus series pilot insert drill head designed for high-performance modular drilling applications in metal cutting operations. It features an FDS45 head connection and accepts a 19mm pilot drill diameter insert alongside two non-pilot inserts for efficient material removal across a maximum drill diameter of 46mm (1.811 inches). The head length measures 25mm (0.984 inches), with a head length to pilot tip of 28.9mm (1.138 inches). Insert retention is screw-based, providing secure clamping under high cutting loads. Coolant-through capability supports chip evacuation and tool life in deep-hole drilling scenarios. This head is installed by machinists and tooling specialists on CNC machining centers and drill presses.
The 3794404 is suited for precision hole-making in ferrous and non-ferrous materials in both production shop and job-shop environments. Its modular KSEM Plus design allows the drill head to be swapped onto compatible KSEM Plus shanks without replacing the entire tool assembly, reducing tooling cost and changeover time. It is commonly used on horizontal and vertical machining centers where consistent, repeatable hole geometry is required. The FDS45 connection interface ensures rigid, repeatable seating between the head and shank. Two non-pilot insert pockets handle the outer cutting zone while the pilot insert establishes bore centerline. The included insert screw and wrench simplify field insert changes at the machine.
Designed for use with KSEM Plus series modular drill shanks using an FDS45 head connection interface. Accepts standard KSEM Plus pilot inserts for the 19mm pilot diameter and two non-pilot inserts for the outer cutting zone. Specific compatible shank part numbers and insert grades should be confirmed with KENNAMETAL tooling selection resources.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool is secured before changing insert heads or inserts. Torque the head connection per the tooling system assembly guidelines using the provided wrench; do not overtighten or substitute non-rated tools. Verify coolant-through passages are clear and coolant pressure is within machine and tooling system specifications before running the first hole.
