The KENNAMETAL 3791279 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert carries the A4G0205GUP geometry in the KCU25 grade, featuring a PVD-applied AlTiN coating that improves wear resistance and tool life across a range of workpiece materials. The neutral hand orientation suits straight-in grooving applications, and the positive rake geometry reduces cutting forces. With a 2.05 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 2.00 mm, this insert is sized for fine-pitch groove work where dimensional accuracy matters. Machinists and CNC tooling specialists working in production or job-shop environments will find this insert well-suited to demanding finishing and grooving cycles.
The 3791279 insert belongs to the Kennametal Series A4 grooving system and is intended for use in compatible A4-series grooving toolholders. It is applied in turning applications targeting materials in the C2 and C6 material grade ranges, which broadly cover cast irons and non-ferrous materials as well as general steel cutting. Typical install scenarios include shaft grooving, snap-ring groove preparation, and undercut operations on medium to small-diameter workpieces. The GUP chip breaker geometry is configured for controlled chip evacuation in these shallow, narrow groove profiles.
Designed for use with Kennametal Series A4 grooving toolholders that accept the A4G insert style. Confirm toolholder seat dimensions and insert retention method against the A4 system specifications before installation.
Carbide grooving inserts should be installed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing any insert. Use the manufacturer-recommended torx or hex key at the specified tool-holding torque for the A4 seat; do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket and shim for wear or debris before seating a new insert, and verify tool overhang is minimized to reduce vibration during the grooving cycle.
