The KENNAMETAL 3769283 is a solid carbide turning insert with a multilayer CVD coating of TiN, TiCN, and Al2O3, designated grade KCM25. The insert follows the ANSI code VBMT331 and ISO code VBMT160404, featuring a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle of 15 degrees and a 5-degree relief angle. The FP chip breaker geometry is engineered for finishing operations. With 2 cutting edges, a honed cutting edge style, and a neutral hand orientation, this insert is suited for precision turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring in production environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators handling steel and stainless steel applications will find the KCM25 grade particularly relevant for its combination of high toughness in steel (P) and moderate wear resistance in stainless steel (M).
This insert is designed for use on CNC lathes and turning centers where screw-on toolholding systems are employed. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, and superalloys and titanium, covering P, M, and S material group classifications. The FP finishing chip breaker makes it appropriate for light depth-of-cut finishing passes, particularly where surface finish and dimensional tolerance are priorities. Maximum depth of cut is 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches). The inscribed circle is 3/8 inch and insert thickness is 3/16 inch, consistent with standard VBMT toolholder pocket requirements.
Designed for use in screw-on VBMT toolholders that accept the ANSI VBMT331 or ISO VBMT160404 insert geometry with a 0.1732-inch (4.40 mm) hole diameter. Verify toolholder pocket angle matches the 5-degree relief (B clearance code, M tolerance code) before installation.
Installation should be performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or removing the insert. Use the manufacturer-specified torque wrench and clamping screw for screw-on insert systems to avoid cracking the carbide substrate or damaging the toolholder pocket. Inspect the pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before installing a new insert.
