The KENNAMETAL 3749359 is a CNMG431FW turning insert in the KCP10 grade, engineered for high-wear-resistance applications in steel and cast iron machining. It features a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN and Al2O3 applied via MTCVD process, providing thermal stability and flank wear resistance at the cutting edge. The insert geometry uses an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a negative rake angle of 10 degrees, a honed cutting edge style, and four usable cutting edges. The FW chip breaker designation indicates a wiper-finishing geometry suited for tight surface finish requirements. Licensed machinists and CNC turning specialists install this insert in KENLOC-compatible toolholders for turning, facing, and boring operations.
This insert is intended for steel (P-class) and aluminum and non-ferrous materials (N-class) applications, delivering high wear resistance on steel and moderate wear resistance with toughness on non-ferrous workpieces. Maximum depth of cut is 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches), making this a finishing-class insert rather than a roughing tool. Typical install scenarios include OD turning, facing passes, and light boring on CNC lathes and turning centers where consistent surface finish and dimensional accuracy are the primary objectives. The neutral hand orientation provides flexibility across standard CNMG-style toolholders.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting CNMG-style inserts with a negative side clearance (N clearance code) and M tolerance class. Compatible with ANSI insert code CNMG431 and ISO insert code CNMG120404. Insert holding methods include clamp and pin styles.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing inserts. Ensure the toolholder pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before installing the insert, as contamination under the seat affects cutting edge height and finish quality. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut rating for this insert geometry, as it is designed for finishing passes rather than heavy material removal.
