The KENNAMETAL 3748366 is a solid carbide turning insert with ANSI designation CNMG431FF and ISO designation CNMG120404, coated with a multilayer TiCN and Al2O3 CVD coating in the KCP05 grade. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a negative rake and side clearance geometry. Designed for the KENLOC series, this insert targets finishing operations on steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous materials. The KCP05 grade delivers high wear resistance in steel (P) applications and moderate wear resistance with toughness in aluminum and non-ferrous (N) applications. Installation is performed by licensed machinists or toolroom technicians using clamp or pin holding methods.
This insert suits CNC turning centers and manual lathes performing turning, facing, and boring operations. It is appropriate for finish cuts on steel and cast iron workpieces in both production and job-shop environments. The FF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing passes with light depths of cut, making it well suited to close-tolerance work where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are priorities. With four available cutting edges, it delivers extended tool life per insert consumed.
Designed for use in KENLOC series toolholders accepting CNMG431 inserts. Suitable for ANSI and ISO standard toolholder styles configured for negative-rake, 80-degree diamond inserts with clamp or pin retention. Verify toolholder pocket geometry before installation.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine powered down, in an E-stop state, and all motion axes confirmed stationary. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp or pin hardware specified for the KENLOC toolholder to seat the insert fully in the pocket. Inspect the insert pocket for chips, wear, or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination causes premature edge failure. Index to a fresh cutting edge rather than replacing the insert until all four edges are spent.
