The KENNAMETAL 3658098 is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert in a 55-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, manufactured to ANSI insert code DCGW2151 and ISO insert code DCGW070204. Carrying grade designation KB1610, this multi-tipped insert is designed for machining hardened materials and offers a balance of moderate wear resistance and toughness. It features a flat-top chip breaker, a chamfered and honed cutting edge style, a 0.25 inch inscribed circle, and a 1/64 inch corner radius. The screw-on holding method provides secure, repeatable seating during high-precision turning operations. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling professionals working in production and job shop environments are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications on hard workpiece materials classified under material grade H05 and H15. The positive rake angle and positive side clearance geometry reduce cutting forces on hardened steel and similar ferrous materials. The uncoated PCBN substrate delivers consistent performance in interrupted and continuous cuts on hardened components where carbide inserts reach their thermal and wear limits. It conforms to both ANSI and ISO dimensional standards, making it compatible with standard DCGW-style screw-on toolholders used across most CNC turning centers.

Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Before indexing or replacing inserts, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the correct torque driver for the screw-on clamp to avoid seat damage or insert cracking — do not overtighten by hand. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating the new insert.
