The KENNAMETAL 3648474 is a solid carbide indexable drill insert designed for use in indexable drilling tool bodies that accept DFT-style inserts. It features the KC7140 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied TiCN and TiN dual-layer coating, delivering wear resistance and heat control during high-feed drilling operations. The insert carries an 84-degree trigon shape with a neutral hand orientation, a 0.4724 inch (12 mm) inscribed circle, and a 0.0313 inch (0.79 mm) corner radius. A 9-degree relief angle and the MD chipbreaker geometry help control chip flow and reduce cutting forces. This insert is installed and serviced by machinists and tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for use in metal-cutting drilling operations on CNC machining centers, lathes with live tooling, and manual drilling setups where indexable carbide tooling is specified. It is appropriate for applications in steel, cast iron, and similar materials where PVD-coated carbide grades are commonly selected. The MD chipbreaker designation is intended for medium-duty drilling conditions. Insert size designation is 070408, with a length of 0.3126 inches (7.94 mm) and a hole diameter of 0.1732 inches (4.4 mm), making it compatible with tool bodies specifying those dimensions.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for indexable drill tool bodies that accept DFT insert style, 070408 insert size, with a 4.4 mm mounting hole diameter. Verify tool body specifications before ordering.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torx or hex key specified by the tool body manufacturer when seating the insert and tighten only to the tool body manufacturer's specified procedure. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage before installing a new insert.
