The KENNAMETAL 2499856 is a solid carbide replaceable tip drill in the KSEM series, designed for precision hole-making in steel and cast iron. It carries the KC7315 manufacturer grade with a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering wear resistance and thermal stability under demanding cutting conditions. The drill features a 15.45mm (49/64 inch, 0.6083 inch decimal) cutting diameter, a 140-degree drill point angle, and a two-flute helical design with two margins. Internal coolant-through passages support both flooded coolant and MQL (minimum quantity lubricant) delivery. Licensed HVAC techs and machinists working with metalcutting operations will find the replaceable tip format reduces insert change time and toolholder cost versus solid drill replacement.
This drill is suited for production drilling in steel and cast iron workpieces in both horizontal and vertical orientations. The HPG insert geometry is rated for inclined-entry and inclined-exit drilling, as well as stacked-plate applications where workpiece transitions would challenge a standard drill geometry. The clamp-style insert holding method and KSEM insert seat size 2 keep the tip secure under interrupted-cut and cross-hole conditions. Typical install environments include CNC machining centers and turning centers running steel and cast iron components in job shop, tier supplier, and production floor settings.
Designed for use with KSEM series insert seat size 2 toolholders. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO material code P) and cast iron (ISO material code K). Compatible ISO number for the insert tip is KSEM0766HPG.
Installation and tip replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the spindle fully stopped and machine power locked out per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Use the recommended torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the replaceable tip - do not overtighten by feel alone. Ensure coolant ports in the toolholder are clear before assembly when running through-coolant or MQL applications. Inspect the insert seat for chips or contamination before each tip change to maintain runout accuracy.
