The KENNAMETAL 2499789 is a KSEM-series replaceable tip drill insert designed for high-productivity hole-making in steel and cast iron. Manufactured from fine-grain solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this tip delivers strong wear resistance and thermal stability under demanding feed rates. It features an HPG insert geometry, a 140-degree drill point angle, and a 2-flute helical design with through-coolant capability, including support for minimum quantity lubrication (MQL). The tip seats into KSEM size-5 insert seat holders and is clamped in place for secure retention. Cutting diameter is 25 millimeters (63/64 inch decimal equivalent). A licensed machinist or CNC operator installs this tip as part of a modular drilling system.
This replaceable tip is suited for machining operations involving steel (ISO material code P) and cast iron (ISO material code K) in both production and job-shop environments. The HPG geometry and through-coolant ports make it well-suited for challenging entry and exit conditions, including inclined surfaces and stacked plate configurations. The modular KSEM system allows tip replacement at the machine without removing the drill body, reducing downtime. Typical applications include deep-hole drilling cycles on CNC machining centers and turning centers with live tooling where consistent, repeatable diameter control is required.
Designed for use with KSEM-series drill bodies accepting size-5 insert seats. Compatible with primary workpiece materials classified as ISO P (steel) and ISO K (cast iron). Verify holder series and insert seat size before ordering.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the tool secured in a tool holder or vise before seating or removing the tip. Use the correct clamp torque driver specified by the drill body manufacturer — do not over-torque, as carbide tips are brittle and can crack under excess clamping force. Inspect the insert seat for chips, debris, or wear before each tip change to ensure proper seating and diameter accuracy.
