The KENNAMETAL 2229552 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision finishing operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous materials. It carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which supports high wear resistance across a range of cutting conditions. The insert follows the DNGG4305FS industry standard designation within KENNAMETAL's KENLOC series, features a 55-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a honed cutting edge style. With a 0.0079-inch corner radius and a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches, this insert is suited for fine finishing passes where tight tolerances and surface finish are priorities. It provides four usable cutting edges, extending tool life between changeovers.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications on CNC lathes and turning centers. The FS chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing cuts on steel and stainless steel workpieces, including superalloys and titanium. The negative rake and negative side clearance geometry make it suitable for rigid setups where insert security under load is required. The clamp-and-pin holding method is compatible with standard KENLOC-style toolholders. This insert is appropriate for both production shop environments and job shop applications where multiple workpiece materials are encountered.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders that accept DNGG-style inserts with a clamp-and-pin holding method. ANSI insert code DNGG430.5 and ISO insert code DNGG150402 govern toolholder compatibility. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and insert seating before use.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket before engaging the clamp and pin to ensure proper insert support and prevent edge chipping on first contact. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris prior to each insert change.
