The KENNAMETAL 1998291 is a single-tipped polycrystalline diamond (PCD) turning insert carrying the industry-standard designation CPGW2151E and manufactured grade KD1405. Applied via CVD coating process, this insert is engineered for high wear-resistance in demanding cutting operations. It features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape, a positive rake angle, a flat-top chip breaker, and a honed cutting edge. The inscribed circle measures 1/4 inch (0.2500 inches), insert length is 6.45 mm (0.2539 inches), thickness is 3/32 inch (0.0938 inches), and the corner radius is 1/64 inch (0.0156 inches). Relief angle is 11 degrees with positive side clearance. Installed using a screw-on holding method, this insert is suited for machinists and tooling specialists working in precision CNC turning environments.
This insert is rated for use in turning, facing, and boring operations. Its grade characteristics qualify it for aluminum and non-ferrous materials (N) at high wear-resistance levels, as well as special and super alloys (S) at high wear-resistance. Primary workpiece materials include non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. Material grades N05 and N10 apply. The flat-top chip breaker geometry and positive rake configuration support clean chip evacuation in these material families. It is appropriate for both light and moderate depth-of-cut applications, with a maximum depth of cut of 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches).
Designed for use in screw-on style toolholders accepting CPGW-style inserts per ANSI and ISO standards. Suitable for operations targeting non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium workpieces consistent with material grades N05 and N10.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians on CNC lathes, turning centers, or boring setups. Always power down and lock out the machine before changing inserts. Use the correct screw torque tool recommended for screw-on insert seats to avoid seat damage — do not overtighten by hand. Verify insert seating and clearance angles against the toolholder specification before resuming cuts.
