The KENNAMETAL 1987659 is a solid carbide milling insert in the SPHX series, designed for high-productivity face and shoulder milling of cast iron. Manufactured to ANSI and ISO designations SPHX1205PCSRGPB, it carries a multilayer MTCVD coating of TiN, TiCN, and Al2O3 under the KCK15 grade, optimized for the thermal and abrasive demands of cast iron machining. The insert is double-sided with a square shape, delivering 8 usable cutting edges per insert. It measures 0.2587 inches in length and 0.2170 inches thick, with an inscribed circle of 0.2165 inches. Installation is via screw holding, and the right-hand configuration suits standard Fix-Perfect cutter bodies.
This insert is intended for use in CNC milling centers and machining cells where cast iron components are processed at production volumes. The GP chip breaker geometry, chamfered and honed cutting edges, and positive 5-degree rake angle promote controlled chip formation and stable tool life in gray and ductile cast iron applications. It is suited for both roughing and semi-finishing passes depending on depth of cut and feed rate selections. Designed for use with the Fix-Perfect cutter series. Compatible with toolholders accepting SPHX1205 insert style in right-hand orientation. Verify cutter body seat geometry and screw torque specifications against the Fix-Perfect toolholder documentation before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine spindle locked out and at zero energy per LOTO procedures. Use the correct torque driver specified by the cutter body manufacturer for the mounting screw to avoid seat damage or insert fracture. Inspect the pocket seat and clamping screw for chips or wear before seating a fresh insert. Do not mix insert grades or geometries within a single cutter body, as uneven cutting forces can lead to premature insert failure or workpiece dimensional error.
