The KENNAMETAL 1871170 is a solid carbide turning insert with a TiAlN PVD coating, designed for precision finish-turning operations in metalworking applications. It follows the DCMT32505UF industry standard geometry, featuring a 55-degree diamond (rhombic) insert shape with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees and a 7-degree relief angle. The UF chip breaker is optimized for finishing cuts, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). The KC5010 grade delivers high wear resistance balanced with moderate toughness, making it well suited for demanding cutting conditions on steel, stainless steel, and superalloys. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production turning environments are the primary installers and users of this insert.
This insert is applied in turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations. It fits screw-on style toolholders designed for DCMT geometry inserts. The 3/8-inch inscribed circle and 0.0079-inch corner radius position it for light-to-moderate finishing passes on steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), aluminum and non-ferrous materials (N), and superalloys and titanium (S). It is equally suited to secondary workpiece material codes N, P, and S. Typical applications include CNC lathe and turning center work in aerospace, automotive, and general machining environments where tight surface finish tolerances are required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard production insert for screw-on DCMT-geometry toolholders compatible with ANSI insert code DCMT32505 and ISO insert code DCMT11T302. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clamping screw size before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the toolholder secured in the turret before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamping screw to seat the insert; do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide. Inspect the pocket seating surface for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure accurate tool-nose position.
