The KENNAMETAL 1866686 is a solid carbide turning insert with a VBGT221LF geometry and KC5010 manufacturer grade. It carries a PVD-applied TiAlN coating that delivers high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. The insert features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, and a screw-on holding method. With a 1/4-inch inscribed circle, a 1/64-inch corner radius, and a positive rake and positive side clearance geometry, this insert is engineered for finishing and light machining operations where tight tolerances and fine surface finishes are required. Installation is performed by licensed machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, titanium, and aluminum workpieces. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and light machining cuts, with a maximum depth of cut of 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches). The KC5010 grade provides a balance of high to moderate wear resistance and toughness, making it effective across P, M, K, N, and S workpiece material classifications per ISO designation. The insert conforms to both ANSI and ISO standards, with ANSI code VBGT221 and ISO code VBGT110304.
Designed for use in screw-on style toolholders compatible with VBGT221 (ANSI) or VBGT110304 (ISO) insert seating geometry. Verify toolholder clearance code B and tolerance code G requirements before installation. Compatible with toolholders accepting a 0.1102-inch (2.80 mm) mounting hole diameter.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque for screw-on style inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and prevent premature edge failure.
