The KENNAMETAL 1849998 is a solid carbide profiling and turning insert in the NPR51 Top Notch series, designed for precision external profiling and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features an ultra-fine grain carbide substrate with a PVD-applied AlTiN coating under the KC5025 manufacturer grade, providing high wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert measures 0.125 inches thick with a 0.0156-inch corner radius, a parallelogram shape, and a 55-degree included angle. It is held in place by a screw-clamp method and is intended for use by experienced CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in production turning environments.
This insert is suited for profiling and turning applications across a broad range of workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, and titanium. It operates with a negative rake angle and zero relief angle, making it compatible with rigid setups where insert strength and edge stability are critical. The 4 cutting edges per insert and maximum depth of cut of 0.1256 inches support efficient material removal in both roughing and finishing profile passes. Typical applications include contour turning, radius blending, and form-profile generation on turned components.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard fit for Top Notch series screw-clamp toolholders accepting NPR51 insert geometry (ISO code KCGX110304R15). Right-hand cutting orientation. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and insert size code NPR51 before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified seating method - do not over-torque the screw as this can crack the carbide insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and runout accuracy.
