The KENNAMETAL 1818473 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the NR3047K insert style in the Top Notch series, this insert features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process for improved wear resistance and extended tool life in demanding cutting applications. It delivers a 2.39 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.81 mm, with a full-radius corner geometry and a 10-degree positive rake angle. The KC5010 grade targets general-purpose and interrupted-cut applications in ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This insert is suited for left-hand grooving operations in both production and job-shop environments on CNC turning equipment. The K chip breaker geometry is engineered to control chip flow in medium to light cuts, making it appropriate for tight-tolerance groove profiles. It carries material grades C3 and C4, covering a broad range of workpiece materials including alloy steels, cast irons, and stainless steels. Licensed machinists and CNC setup technicians are the primary installers in industrial machining environments.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement for Top Notch series NR-style grooving toolholders that accept size 3047 left-hand inserts. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and insert retention method before substituting into existing setups.
Insert installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC technician with the machine in a full stopped and locked-out state per applicable machine guarding and OSHA lockout-tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket before applying clamping torque; do not force or shim the insert to compensate for pocket wear. Verify correct insert hand orientation against the toolholder specification before the first cut. Inspect the insert seating pocket for chips or debris that could prevent full contact and cause premature insert failure.
