The KENNAMETAL 1818354 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the NGD4125K insert style with a KC5010 grade and PVD-applied TiAlN coating, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability across a range of ferrous and nonferrous workpiece materials. The insert is left-hand oriented with a 3.18 mm (0.1252 inch) cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 6.35 mm (0.2500 inch). A positive rake angle of 10 degrees and a K-style chip breaker promote controlled chip evacuation in finish and semi-finish grooving cuts. Material grade classification is C3 and C4.
This insert is suited for production turning environments where consistent groove geometry and tool life are priorities. The Top Notch series is a widely used platform in job shops and production facilities running steel, stainless, cast iron, and similar materials. The insert seat size 4 and included angle of 55 degrees place it in standard NGD-style toolholders. It is typically installed by machinists and CNC turning specialists in light to medium grooving applications where chip control and surface finish repeatability are critical.
Designed for use with Top Notch series NGD-style toolholders that accept insert seat size 4. The lead angle of 3 degrees and left-hand cut direction must be matched to the toolholder configuration. No additional specific compatible model numbers were provided in the product data.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC turning technician with the machine fully stopped and in a safe, locked-out state. Seat the insert firmly in the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw per the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the insert pocket for debris or damage before seating to ensure proper insert support and prevent premature edge failure. Never attempt to change inserts while the spindle is in motion.
