The KENNAMETAL 1818352 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and machining centers. Designated style NPD3012K with manufacturer grade KC5010, this insert features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering strong oxidation resistance and wear life at elevated cutting temperatures. The insert has a 4.83 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 6.35 mm, making it suited to moderate-depth grooving passes in steel and cast iron. A positive rake angle of 10 degrees and a K-style chip breaker promote efficient chip formation and reduced cutting forces during interrupted or continuous grooving cuts.
This insert is intended for use in metalworking applications where repeatable groove geometry and tool life consistency are required. It is configured for right-hand cutting and carries an insert size designation of 3012. Typical installations include OD grooving, face grooving, and parting operations on production lathes in job shop and manufacturing environments. The KC5010 grade and PVD-applied TiAlN coating are commonly applied to ferrous materials classified under material grades C3 and C4. Machinists and CNC operators in precision machining shops are the primary users of this insert type.
Designed as a replacement-style grooving insert for use in KENNAMETAL Top Notch series toolholders accepting NPD3012 insert geometry in right-hand configuration.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Before indexing or replacing inserts, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the tool is secured in the holder per the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications. Use proper insert seating tools and inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Follow all applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements during tooling changes.
