The KENNAMETAL 1818262 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the NGD3189K insert style and coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability in demanding cutting applications. The KC5010 grade designates a fine-grain carbide substrate suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes on steel, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys. Key dimensions include a 4.8 mm (0.189 inches) cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 6.35 mm (0.250 inches). This insert is configured for right-hand cutting with a positive 10-degree rake angle and a K-style chip breaker.
This insert is intended for use in Top Notch series grooving toolholders on production turning equipment. It is suited for residential-shop, job-shop, and production floor environments where consistent groove width and depth control are required. The 55-degree included angle and 0.57 mm (0.0225 inches) corner radius make it appropriate for profiling and grooving cuts in ferrous and non-ferrous materials classified under material grades C3 and C4. A lead angle of 3 degrees supports chip control and surface finish consistency. Machinists and CNC operators working in metalcutting trades will find this insert appropriate for medium-volume to high-volume turning cycles.
Designed for use with Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept the NGD3189K insert style. Compatible with tooling systems referencing manufacturer number NGD3189R/LK.
Installation should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a fully stopped and locked-out state before insert indexing or replacement. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten or substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and toolholder manufacturer guidelines for clamping force and insert orientation verification before resuming cutting operations.
