The KENNAMETAL 1817681 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Designated style NG3M300K, it carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering hard, wear-resistant performance on a wide range of workpiece materials. The insert operates with a 3.00 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 3.81 mm. A positive rake angle of 10 degrees and a K-style chip breaker geometry promote controlled chip evacuation. Left-hand orientation and a 3-degree lead angle define the cutting direction and entry geometry. This insert is installed and replaced by CNC machinists and toolroom technicians.
This insert is suited for metric grooving applications in production turning environments, both light industrial and high-volume manufacturing. The KC5010 grade, rated for material grades C3 and C4, performs across ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The Top Notch series toolholding system provides the clamping platform for this insert. The 0.19 mm corner radius (0.0075 inches) supports general grooving profiles without a full-radius configuration. Typical use cases include external groove profiling, undercut operations, and snap-ring groove preparation on turned components.
Designed for use with KENNAMETAL Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept NG-style inserts with size designation 3M300.
This insert is seated and clamped by a CNC machinist or toolroom technician using the appropriate Top Notch series toolholder. Ensure the machine spindle is stopped and the turret is indexed to a safe position before removing or installing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench or clamping screw tool specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert without over-tightening. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and repeatability.
