The KENNAMETAL 1817618 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which provides heat resistance and extended tool life during interrupted and continuous cuts. The insert delivers a 4.8 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 3.81 mm, and a 0.57 mm corner radius, making it suited for medium to fine grooving work in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. A positive rake angle of 10 degrees reduces cutting forces and promotes chip evacuation. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC tooling specialists in production and job-shop environments.
The 1817618 is intended for use in external grooving, face grooving, and light parting applications on turning equipment. Its KC5025 grade and K chip breaker geometry are well matched to applications requiring consistent chip control and surface finish. The right-hand orientation suits conventional lathe setups where the tool feeds from right to left. Typical use cases include groove-for-seal applications, undercuts, and step features on turned components in both high-volume production and precision one-off work. The insert style is NG with an included angle of 55 degrees and a 3-degree lead angle.
Designed for use in Top Notch series tool holders that accept NG-style grooving inserts. The insert size designation is 3189. Refer to KENNAMETAL Top Notch tooling system documentation to confirm holder compatibility before ordering.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the Top Notch holder pocket and verify clamping torque per the holder manufacturer specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the insert seating surface and holder pocket for chips or debris prior to installation to prevent insert rocking or premature fracture.
