The KENNAMETAL 1817054 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for right-hand internal UNJ threading operations. Carrying the ISO code LT16NR12UNJ and manufactured to grade KC5025, this insert is built for precision thread forms at 12 threads per inch (TPI) with a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle. The PVD-applied TiAlN coating provides thermal resistance and wear protection suited to demanding cutting environments. At 0.1430 inches (3.44 mm) thick, the insert seats securely in compatible LT16 laydown toolholders. Installation and use are handled by machinists and CNC lathe technicians working in production or job-shop threading applications.
This insert is suited for internal threading of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The UNJ thread standard specifies a controlled root radius for improved fatigue strength, making this insert the correct choice when UNJ-form threads are required by print — common in aerospace, defense, and high-cycle mechanical assemblies. The right-hand cutting geometry is appropriate for standard lathe spindle rotation in conventional internal threading passes.
Designed for use in LT16-style laydown threading toolholders accepting NR-geometry inserts. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium as specified by the manufacturer. Confirm toolholder pocket dimensions and ISO code match before ordering.
Threading inserts of this type are installed and indexed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder specification — do not over-torque, as carbide inserts are brittle. Verify thread form and pitch with a thread gauge on the first part before running production.
