The KENNAMETAL 1817050 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for precision internal thread cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying ISO code LT16NR16UNJ, this right-hand insert cuts UNJ-standard internal threads at 16 threads per inch (TPI) with a 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.1430 inches (3.44 mm). The PVD-applied TiAlN coating delivers high heat resistance and edge wear protection during interrupted cuts and high-speed threading passes. Machining professionals and toolroom technicians select this insert for its consistent thread form accuracy and long tool life on difficult-to-machine materials.
This insert is suited for internal threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. It is commonly used in production turning environments where UNJ thread forms are required for aerospace, fluid-system, and high-fatigue fastener applications. The NR insert style seats in compatible LT-style laydown threading toolholders designed for 16-size inserts. Its geometry and coating make it a practical choice for both roughing and finishing passes on the thread forms listed above.
Designed for use in LT-style laydown threading toolholders accepting size 16 NR inserts. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium as stated by the manufacturer.
Threading inserts should be installed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out per facility LOTO procedures. Seat the insert fully in the toolholder pocket and confirm the clamping screw torque is within the toolholder manufacturer's specification before starting the spindle. Inspect the insert seating surface and pocket for chips or debris before each insert change, as contamination can affect thread form accuracy. Replace the insert at the first sign of edge chipping or surface finish degradation to prevent thread form errors.
