The KENNAMETAL 1796121 is a carbide threading insert in the NT3RCK style, designed for cutting both external and internal threads on CNC lathes and threading centers. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, the KC5010 grade delivers strong wear resistance and edge retention at elevated cutting temperatures. The insert covers an external pitch range of 2.50 to 4.00 mm (6 to 11 TPI) and an internal pitch of 4.00 mm (6 TPI), making it a versatile choice for threading operations across a wide range of workpiece materials including steels and cast irons rated at material grades C3 and C4. It is sized for the Top Notch toolholding system and is installed with the right-hand orientation.
This insert is suited for general-purpose threading in production and job-shop environments on both CNC and manual turning equipment. The partial profile 60-degree thread form handles a broad pitch range without requiring a dedicated insert for each thread pitch, reducing tooling inventory for shops running varied threading jobs. Typical applications include threading mild steel, alloy steel, and cast iron workpieces in automotive, oil field, and industrial manufacturing operations. The insert is sold individually but carries a minimum order quantity of 5 units.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement for Top Notch series threading toolholders accepting size 3 NT-style inserts. Specific toolholder compatibility should be verified against the KENNAMETAL Top Notch toolholder catalog using insert style NT3RCK.
Threading inserts of this type are installed and changed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the turret locked out before seating or removing the insert. Use the correct torx or hex key specified for the Top Notch clamp screw, and do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and susceptible to fracture under excessive clamping force. Verify insert orientation, grade, and pitch range against the programmed thread cycle before resuming cutting.
