The KENNAMETAL 1779088 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting right-hand 10-32 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, it delivers extended tool life when threading harder materials such as stainless steel, cast iron, and ductile iron. The plug chamfer distributes cutting load across the leading threads, making it well suited for through-hole tapping where chips are pushed ahead and clear of the cut. With an overall length of 2.375 inches and a thread length of 0.875 inches, the 1779088 fits standard tap holders and machines used in production and maintenance environments. The H3 thread limit and Class 2B fit classification ensure consistent thread geometry within commercial tolerance requirements.
This tap is intended for use in metalworking and machine shop environments, toolrooms, and maintenance repair operations where 10-32 UNF threads are routinely produced. Typical applications include threading steel structural components, stainless steel fastener holes, and cast iron housings. The TiCN finish reduces friction and heat buildup, which is especially useful when running higher spindle speeds or tapping in abrasive ferrous materials. It is sized for use in hand tap wrenches, CNC machining centers, and drill presses equipped with a tapping attachment.
Designed for cutting 10-32 UNF right-hand internal threads in through-hole applications across cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tap holders sized for a 0.194-inch shank diameter.
Installation and use of this tap should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping operations and cutting tool safety. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the drill press, CNC, or hand tool is fully stopped before tool changes. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use and replace when thread quality degrades or torque increases noticeably.
